An alternate approver can act on behalf of a main approver if an alternate approver is designated for a specific approval rule. Up to 5 alternate approvers can be designated for a single approval rule.

There is also the ability for approvers to set themselves as away in their user profile. To do this, navigate to your user profile, click on "email settings" from the left hand menu and then click on the applicable option below.
